I think James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine, purposefully set us up for global warming.
He wanted to force humanity to band together. To do this he created an incredibly threatening problem that can only be dealt with on a truly global scale.

Why would he set it up so that when the first powerful effects of global warming were felt it would be too late to avoid many terrible disasters?
